Craftsmanship is not a fixed label. It exists on a spectrum, and that spectrum can be measured.

When an artist uses grids, tracing methods, transfer techniques, or similar tools to achieve accuracy, proportion, or texture, the process becomes partially assisted rather than entirely dependent on direct execution. These tools guide the outcome. They are not invalid, but they are not invisible either. Their presence changes the nature of what is being demonstrated.

The level of craftsmanship in any work can therefore be understood as a percentage. How much of the final result was achieved through the artist's direct skill, observation, and execution? How much was guided by an external method? These are not judgments, they are measurements.

An artist who works entirely from observation and control is engaging in a fundamentally different process from one who uses assistive methods to reach the same result. Both may produce identical outcomes. But the process behind each is not the same, and process matters.

This distinction is rarely communicated. As a result, creators whose work demands high levels of accuracy and control often receive little recognition for the actual difficulty of what they do. This framework exists to change that.

The goal is transparency, not criticism. Every artwork can be assessed through a set of parameters that help identify its position on the spectrum of craftsmanship. The parameters and methodology behind this framework will continue to be explored and refined over time.

This is an ongoing exploration. Artists, craftsmen, and practitioners who wish to critique, challenge, or contribute to these ideas are welcome to reach out.
